What to buy with Ankle Wraps/Splints

How to use Rolyan Ankle Splint?

A splint used for foot inversion provides hip external rotation; when used for eversion, internal hip rotation occurs.

  1. Unroll splint and lay it on the floor with elastic foot and ankle wrap flat. Orient splint with shorter wrap (foot wrap) distal.
  2. Place patient’s foot onto splint, centering metatarsal heads on foot wrap.
  3. Pull two sides of the foot wrap up and fasten the hook to loop piece sewn onto foot wrap. On youth sizes, the side with loop material is longer than the side with a hook. If shortening is needed, cut off one of the loop pieces and stitch the end of the wrap to prevent fraying.
  4. Pull one end of ankle wrap across the top of the foot and around the back of the ankle. Fasten hook piece to a loop piece on ankle wrap. Repeat with the other side.
  5. Starting near the foot, wrap long strap across the top of the foot and front of the ankle. Continue wrapping around and up the leg, pulling to provide an appropriate amount of stretch. Make final wrap around the waist and fasten the hook piece to wrap.
  6. Beginning at the foot, adjust the amount of pull provided by strap and reposition hook closure at waist.
  7. If long strap is longer than necessary, cut off the hook piece and as much strap as necessary. Either sew hook piece onto the new end of strap or place hook piece over new end and strap at waist.

Care and Cleaning

  • Wash frequently to remove body oils and other soil.
  • Fasten closures. Hand wash fabric in warm water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly. Do not wring. Dry at room temperature. Be sure the splint is completely dry before reapplying it.
  • Do not use ointments or oils under the splint.
  • Do not dry clean or expose to heat or sunlight for extended periods of time.

Precautions

  • This splint is to be fitted initially by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the purpose for which it is prescribed. The healthcare professional is responsible for providing wearing instructions and precautions to other healthcare practitioners, care providers involved in the patient’s care, and the patient.
  • If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or discomfort occurs, use should be discontinued and a healthcare professional consulted.
  • This product contains natural rubber latex, which may cause allergic reactions.
  • Be careful that the splint is not so tight that circulation is impaired.
